● Membrane Formation: Our present interest lies on the study of the formation mechanisms of polymer membranes prepared from a polymer/solvent binary systems or a polymer/additive/solvent ternary system by exposition to a liquid or gas non-solvent; that is, we focus on the understanding of phase separation of ternary and quaternary systems.
● Low-biofouling membrane: We aim at investigating the polymer/additives couples that would possibly lead to the best low-biofouling properties. The preparation method is the in-situ modification method. This technique does not involve any other unit operation in the membrane preparation process, compared to surface modification processes. Indeed, membranes are formed and modified all at once. In-situ modification is believed to enhance hydration and low-biofouling properties of the whole membrane. Currently, after spending time on the design of PEGylated materials that could be blended with common hydrophobic membrane polymers, we are putting most of our efforts on the design of zwitterionic copolymers. One important issue to overcome is the solubility of zwitterionic copolymers with hydrophobic polymers. If resolved, membranes should be extremely stable and efficient under complex environment.
● Blood compatible membranes and interfaces: We investigate polymer/cell membrane interactions in order to design soft interfaces (gels) and membranes that could either select one particular type of cell from whole blood (selective interaction) or be inactive toward whole blood (hemocompatible). Although more complex, the underlying mechanisms of hemocompatible materials and antifouling materials are quite similar. Hence, hemocompatible membranes can also be applied in more general applications of antifouling membranes (wastewater treatment for example).
● Membranes for oil-in-water and water-in-oil separation: In these related studies, the focus is laid on the design of membranes which particular surface properties allow recovering oily wastes produced in industrial processes, possibly by gravity-driven separation. Depending on the nature of the dispersing phase, we design either superhydrophilic/superoleophobic membranes or superhydrophobic/superhydrophilic membranes. Efforts are also made on the design of “do-it-all” membranes, that could possibly break any kind of emulsion regardless of the nature of the dispersing phase (oil or water). Applications are numerous, from the treatment of wastewaters from petroleum industry or the purification of diesel oils, to the recovery of wastes generated in vegetable oil industry.
