Membrane Research Laboratory has been dedicated to the study of membrane technologies for more than 20 years. It focuses on the applications of gas separation, pervaporation and membrane distillation. During the past two decades, there are more than 300 SCI publications about membrane formation, membrane modification, pervaporation, and gas separation. Recently, a unique technique has been developed: positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy, which is a powerful technique that can be used to analyze the free volume properties of multilayered membranes. Papers on analyzing the microstructure (free volume) of membranes have been published in elite journals: Macromolecules, Langmuir, Carbon, Journal of Membrane Science. Molecular dynamic simulation studies involving composite membranes and fabrication of porous polypropylene hollow fiber membranes are now being developed. Further advanced studies on positron annihilation techniques are being considered. In the future, forward osmosis membranes and gas-barrier films will be investigated.
